75 years of Independence – Greetings to people of Pakistan from people of India

We, the members of the India chapter of Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace & Democracy, representing a cross-section of the Indian society, stand in solidarity with the people of Pakistan on this 75th Independence Day. We recognise that despite different trajectories, we have been united in our people’s struggles for freedom, dignity, human rights, gender equality, peace and democracy. However, after 75 years, our societies are in deeper conflicts, triggered by the religious, ethnic, class, caste and gender polarisations created by chauvinism and militarised nationalism. Pakistan and India have not only become custodians of conservatism, we have also become fertile ground for intolerance, violence, terror and state repression.

It is time that the people of Pakistan and India join together, and strengthen our fight against the evil forces that keep us apart and make us crave for the blood of each other. We must unite to fight the social, economic, religious, cultural, militaristic and capitalistic forces around us, who are only keen to keep us divided, fighting and bleeding.

We reaffirm our people’s right to health, education, land, livelihood, dignity, equality, peace, human rights and democracy. On the occasion of the 75 years of independence, we must stand together to also reaffirm the rights of the brutalised people of undivided Jammu & Kashmir, who are being colonised till date.

We stand with the people of Pakistan in celebrating 75 years of independence, but also collectively resolve to reaffirm the real freedom and ‘Azadi’ our ancestors fought for and won from British imperialism.
