Prisoners of contention

Join us on  International Human Rights Day.

PIPFPD, in collaboration with prominent South Asian peace organisations is happy to invite you to a webinar on ‘Prisoners of contention; Speaking of issues and rights of Indo–Pak prisoners’ on  December 10th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (IST) and 10:30 a.m -12:30 p.m. (PKT). The webinar will also release a political statement on the issue and felicitate veteran activists who  secured the release of many prisoners in the past.

As you know, most of the Indian citizens in Pakistan’s prisons and Pakistani citizens in Indian prisons are innocent captives of circumstances, destiny,  and the historical contention between India and Pakistan. They become victims of tense relations and do not get released and repatriated on the day of completing their sentences.

Hamid Ansari was the first prisoner in the history of more than 65 years to be released and repatriated on the day of completion of his sentence. Hence, his release also became a case of historical significance for the peace and human rights movements in India and Pakistan.

It is time to raise the issue of the rights of prisoners and their relatives on International Human Rights Day. It is time for the revival of the Joint Judicial Committee on Prisoners, which  has not been in existence since 2013. Both governments should also release and repatriate aged prisoners, women prisoners, and prisoners with non-serious charges. There has also been a consistent demand for a no-arrest policy as well as a Maritime Economic Co-operation Agreement between India and Pakistan.

The panel for the webinar consists of speakers from Pakistan and India, and they will address the issues of prisoners and the context of all-time low relations between the South Asian neighbours.

We are happy to have with us:

  • Hamid Ansari  and Fauzia Ansari
  • Nirupama Subramanian on ‘The political challenges involved in securing the release of cross-border prisoners’
