Dear Friends,
We are honored to invite you to an online meeting on June 26th at 7 pm IST to remember and celebrate the life and struggles of Karamat Ali. This gathering holds special significance as we reflect on the profound impact of Karamat Ali, a leader recognized throughout South Asia for his pivotal roles in various forums.
Karamat Ali was instrumental in founding People’s SAARC and the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication, and played a crucial role in initiatives such as the Pakistan Peace Coalition and the South Asia Labour Forum. His vision extended beyond borders, advocating for a unified South Asian labor forum akin to the European Union, fostering free movement and unity among workers and citizens. He was also the founding member of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education & Research (PILER), a pioneer institution for labor rights which he co-founded with Comrade Kutti in Karachi.
His journey began in the 1960s as part of the revolutionary youth movement, and he emerged as a beacon of leadership in advocating for workers’ rights across South Asia. His principles were rooted in justice, equality, and empowerment, shaping a legacy that continues to inspire us today.
Join us as we draw inspiration from Karamat Ali’s enduring spirit, his unwavering commitment to democracy, and his deep empathy for the marginalized. We will celebrate his life, his contributions, and the values he cherished dearly.
The event will feature esteemed speakers including J. John and Farooq Tariq, prominent labor activists, Syeda Hameed and Anis Haroon, distinguished women’s rights activists, as well as Ram Mohan and Ashok/Roma, noted social and natural resource-based rights activists; and Tapan Bose, a human rights activist.
